Unemployment rates are at historic lows; where do community leaders find people?

Over 10% of the labor force, or 16 million people, want to work but do not have jobs or want to work more hours than their current job. Further, another 20 million employees have the skills to succeed in higher-paying jobs. Taken together, about 25% of the workforce is available if they are effectively reached.

Why don’t those candidates apply on their own?

We find candidates do not apply to job postings for a number of reasons. First, they may not know what jobs to apply for; consider that only 31% of people know how to secure a manufacturing job without a connection. Second, their current situation may not afford them the flexibility and time to apply for jobs. Third, they may be plain discouraged from applying for jobs; for example, the most popular hourly worker job boards average 200 applications per hire.

How do communities solve those frictions?

Most hourly workers leverage their connections’ insights and access to get jobs. Because most connections develop in church, neighborhoods, recreation groups, school, and workplaces, we partner with leaders in those environments.
